I am Everywoman

When I was in Western Civ class at Poudre High School in Ft. Collins CO, with two of my favorite teachers, Mrs. Zach and Mr. Bacon, we talked a great deal about EVERYMAN, an ordinary individual often set in extraordinary circumstances. The concept was first presented in a play called Everyman in the 15th century. Throughout the ages, there have been many great roles in plays, movies and books that present an everyman character. The concept is about having a universal voice with an application to everyone’s life. Everyman does not possess unusual skills or talents. They have their batch of strengths just like the rest of the world, coupled with their limitations. Their effectiveness is in the fact that everyman can see themselves in that situation. You could just as easily be in that very situation and succeed.

Molly Ringwald Theory

I call this the Molly Ringwald Theory. If you are a millennial you may not remember her. Molly Ringwald stared in Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, and Sixteen Candles, among several other 1980’s classics. She was awesome. What made her so great is that she was believable. People could relate to her. She was cute enough to “get the guy” but not so ultra-gorgeous that people couldn’t see themselves in that situation. I believe people thought, “Well, if she can be with someone as cute as Max Ryan (from Sixteen Candles), then, so can I.” It gave all of us “average looking” girls hope. I am not calling Molly Ringwald average. She is actually adorable. But she was the 80’s version of everywoman.

I see myself as an everywoman. I am no great scholar or business champion. I wasn’t much of an athlete or the prettiest in the room. I speak for the regular person who has standard life experiences. I walk a lot and think deeply about everything that happens. What I lack in skill and talent, I make up for with willingness and enthusiasm. The same stuff that happens to me, happens to everyone. I just love tumbling around with the ideas and greater purpose behind it.

Everyone Has the Ability to Heal Others

Lastly, in The Bible Jesus talks about himself in much the same way, as a mere son of God, just like everyone is a son or daughter of God. He presents himself as an everyman. He says we can do anything he can do. This is also the premise of the healing modality of Reiki. Reiki is based on the assumption that anyone and everyone can heal with their hands, like Jesus did, with proper training and intention. Cool, huh? I will write more about that in the near future.

I often think, “Who am I to do this work? Do I have the ability?” And then I think, “Who am I NOT to do whatever I can to help people?” I hope that my writings, postings, action steps and videos help someone somewhere. I am just like you, doing my best everyday given my unique batch of skills, talents and limitations.
