Ways to Soothe Your Soul

Life is so crazy at this point. Changes are taking place everywhere, every minute. Sometimes we need to just step off the treadmill and catch our breath. Stand in the place that we are and be grateful. We desperately need to spend some time soothing our souls. Here are some ideas of how to soothe your soul:

  1. Take a time out from inputs. Image for a minute you have everything you need. Nothing else is needed for you to be perfect. You are complete.
  2. Keep your cell phone out of the bedroom. Be fully present to yourself and partner for your bedtime hours.
  3. Talk a walk in nature. Breathe in the air deeply. Imagine it fully nourishing your system.
  4. Read a heart-warming book before bed and let the imagery inform your dreams.
  5. Put your hands on your heart and give it thanks.
  6. Tune in to your heartbeat. At any moment, no matter where you are or what is going on around you, you can tune inward and feel your heart beating throughout your entire body. Try it. Make a habit of it. I don’t mean feel your pulse but you can start there.
  7. Write what you know to be true for you.
  8. Volunteer to help others.
  9. Put your phone away when you are with people you love.
  10. Write down all the things you are grateful for.
  11. Breathe into your heart space and hold it for a few seconds. Exhale the love from your heart.
  12. Buy flowers for yourself or another.
  13. Hold a warm drink between your two hands, then drink, following the warmth all the way down your body.
  14. Meditate (I know you don’t think you are good at this. Just try it. There is no such thing as being “good” at it.)
  15. If you live near water, go sit by it and gaze upon it, step into it, listen to it. Ask it if it has a message for you and then listen.
  16. Lay on the ground and look up at the sky. Watch the clouds, watch the birds. Allow the earth to absorb all that doesn’t serve you. Feel all your stress and limitations melt into the earth for recycling.
  17. Sit up against a tree and remember the childhood favorite book, the Giving Tree. The tree was there to provide anything the boy needed, in the end he just needed to lean up against the stump for support.
  18. Lay in the sun—I don’t mean in your swimsuit for hours with tanning oil. I am talking about getting a blanket, throwing it on the ground in your backyard or near a river or in a park, fully clothed and just lay there, soaking in the warmth and nourishment of the sun.
  19. Take off your tight jeans and put on your pajama or yoga pants—organic cotton ones, even better.
  20. Watch the changes in the sky as the sun sets.
  21. Think about all the people you love. Make a list. Send a quick love text or email.
  22. Start a fire in your fire pit or fire place or flip that switch on the gas fire place and just stare into it for a while.
  23. Light a candle and stare into it.
  24. Get in the flow of a creative endeavor. Do you knit, write poems, tend a garden, love to cook, enjoy scavenging through goodwill racks for treasures? These are all soul enriching activities that are worth investing time in.
  25. Let’s keep adding to this. . .
